Do You Know How to Multitask?

October 28th, 2008 EnhancedPixels Posted in Fun, Guide, Regular Posts No Comments »

Our life requires us to multitask. When you drive a car, you might be required to talk to your children or on the phone, eat while watching the news etc. Multitasking is actually a lot of fun. It allows you to do at least two things at the time, and thus use your time more effectively. There are many activities which can be combined together, for example, eating and watching TV. Why would you look at the plate, if you can watch news at the same time? Talking with full mouth is not healthy, and thus it is not the best idea to talk with family members while eating a meal. Many children and teenagers do their homework and watch TV simultaneously. This might be a little bit tricky, but if a teenager can concentrate on his homework while listening to the music or watching TV, there is nothing wrong about what he is doing. I saw many parents alarmed by the fact, that their teenager does a few things at the same time. In my opinion, there is nothing to worry about. Young people can concentrate a lot easier than older people. I suggest that you stop worrying about it in case you do worry about it right now.

Internet and Weather

One of the best things that the Internet gave me (among many other things) is the fact, that I completely got rid of my traditional thermometer to measure the temperature outside. I simply no longer need it. What I have instead, is a software, which shows me what the temperature outside currently is (of course the data comes from a distance of a few miles). Additionally, there are many sites on the internet which predict the weather for the next few days, and I check them from time to time too. With this software, I can additionally check the force of wind on the particular day and get some more useful information. I do it every time I plan a trip with my family. I find this feature of the Internet to be very interesting and convenient. I am very happy with the Internet in general. It is hard for me to imagine, that even a few years ago, people did not have access to the Internet. Even 10 years ago, the Internet was not as popular as it is today. Many people even did not know that such a thing like the Internet existed.

Games and Laughing

Is playing games often associated with laughter? Measuring how often people are laughing while playing games would be an interesting study to conduct. There are many games which are filled with humor, but it seems that the majority of games are action oriented. Actually, most people, when they think of games, they might think of games filled with violence. However, it doesn’t mean all games are like this. For example, Sam&Max or Jack Keane are the examples of games, which are fun to play and filled with humor. Even the recent bestseller – Grand Theft Auto IV, contains many jokes and parodies of cultural symbols, even though the game generally is focused on action. Let’s hope that there will be more games in the futurewhich make us laugh.

When Will Windows XP Disappear?

October 7th, 2008 EnhancedPixels Posted in Fun, Online, Regular Posts, Security No Comments »

An operating system is one of the most important parts of a computer. While technically it may not be a part of hardware, it is a software which is really necessary. Windows XP is still a very popular operating system, even thought Windows Vista was released some time ago. The question is: when will Windows XP disappear? It may not be easy to answer the question fully, but Microsoft has stated some time ago, that it will stop selling/ allowing to preinstall Windows XP in 2010. There is an exception to this rule, specifically when it comes to very cheap computers being sold in China and India. Such computers will still contain Windows XP to make it possible to keep the price as low as possible.

Many years ago, nobody heard about social networks, or at least they were not so popular as they are today. Currently, social networks are among the most popular internet sites and millions of people who would otherwise probably not use internet that often, are spending many hours in front of their computers. Social networks allow people to make friends with others who live very far away, possibly even in other counties. Social networks are also used to communicate with those who we know in real life. With so much recent success of these networks, the question is whether they pose any danger. After observing people socializing on the internet, I have to say that there might be a danger that since people are anonymous, they might say things they wouldn’t dare in real life.

Many people in the world have probably heard of Sudoku. Sudoku is an Eastern game that is aimed at improving a person’s ability to think logically. Sudoku is a very addicting game where numbers are involved and requires time to be solved. The easiest way, but probably not the most effective one, is to play Sudoku on a piece of paper. However, for a more enjoyable experience I suggest that you download some sort of software that will enable you to play it as many times as possible. There are also many small devices that you can buy that are designed only for playing Sudoku. They are available on the internet and are a great idea for a gift. I myself cannot imagine of a better way to spend my time if I wait in line for a doctor’s appointment or have to wait for somebody outside of my house.

Apple iGlasses?

September 27th, 2008 EnhancedPixels Posted in Fun, Regular Posts No Comments »

Some time ago Apple has filled patent applications that describe improvements in head-mounted displays such as helmet or glasses. This sounds interesting because it may lead to iGlasses, a product which would contain two small display screens with magnifying lenses inside glasses. Apple has stated that this type of approach provides a wider field of view, which is desirable and additionally creates a more natural viewing situation for a user. Since Apple has products with very small video screens like iPods, this type of innovation could really benefit their product line. Time will tell when iGlasses will become a reality, but there are also some problems, like for example the fact that such glasses could damage the wearer’s vision.

Virtual Pets

Pets is a creature kept for companionship and enjoyment and while this term is currently reserved for animals, I believe that we may soon see people having virtual pets. There are already many games/programs which allow you to have a virtual aquarium or to take care of a creature like tamagotchi. What current games miss is the lack of sufficient intelligence of in-game creatures such as real dogs or other alive pets have. Dogs may not seem that smart for people who never had a dog, but I am sure that dog owners know what I am talking about. Sometimes dogs can surprise with their intelligence and this is something what artificial intelligence needs. Will it be an easy task? I don’t think so, but we have a lot of time to develop such technology.

Soft Bodied Robots

September 16th, 2008 EnhancedPixels Posted in Fun, Regular Posts No Comments »

In the Terminator trilogy there was a robot who was composed out of some kind of metal and he was able to change shape and squeeze through tight holes. Currently researchers are working on a soft bodied robot, which would be able to maneuver through openings smaller than its dimensions. Such robots could be used to a variety of missions, such as bomb disposal or other dangerous tasks. The robot which I read about is very small, about the size of a softball and is still being developed. It would be great to have robots replace doing dangerous tasks and I think that in the future even soldiers will be gradually replaced by machines.
